The feeling that stops most people

Nearly every adult says a version of the same three sentences: that they feel embarrassed, that they should have done this twenty years ago, and that they will be the worst student their teacher has had. The third is never true.

What the first month actually looks like

Slower than you would like, and far less humiliating than you fear. Most adult beginners spend the first three or four classes on letter recognition and letter sounds.

Months two to six

Joined letters and vowel marks by month three. The first short surahs read from the page by month four. Fluency begins around month five or six.

Three practical things that help

Book the class at a time you will protect. Keep homework to fifteen minutes. Tell your teacher when you are struggling — they will slow down, but only if they know.

If you would rather not be on camera

Voice-only classes are available from the first session at no extra cost, and a good number of adult students use them.
